Michael J. Fox has faced numerous challenges, particularly in recent years.
The beloved actor has been engaged in a prolonged struggle with Parkinson’s disease, a battle that has persisted for many decades, and undoubtedly, it’s a fight that becomes more challenging with time.
However, what many may not realize is that Michael’s childhood was also marked by significant difficulties, especially when he endeavored to establish himself in Hollywood.
Despite these obstacles, Michael J. Fox’s life has been characterized by remarkable success, although Parkinson’s disease has undeniably taken its toll on him.
To begin with, Michael’s upbringing was rather unconventional.
He was born on June 9, 1961, in Edmonton, Canada, and he spent his formative years in a family where his father served in the Canadian Armed Forces, necessitating frequent relocations.
Michael’s mother held a stable job as a payroll clerk, providing a steady income for the family. However, Michael grew up in a typical blue-collar household. Eventually, the family settled in Burnaby, British Columbia, where Michael discovered his passion for acting during his junior high years.
He immersed himself in the Drama division at school, showcasing his natural talent for acting. Encouraged by his theater teacher, Michael auditioned for a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation series called Leo & Me, securing a role that kickstarted his acting career.
Simultaneously, he landed various television roles while honing his craft at the local theater in Vancouver. It became evident to Michael that acting was his true calling in life. At the age of 17, he made the bold decision to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles.
Reflecting on his determination, Michael remarked, “I knew that if I wanted to be someone, I couldn’t just sit on my parents’ porch and think, ‘Boy, if I was only born in the States and my parents had money and weren’t living paycheck to paycheck, I could do something with my life.'”
Opting to leave high school, Michael’s parents wholeheartedly supported his aspirations. His father went the extra mile by driving him all the way to Los Angeles. Recalling the journey on LIVE with Kelly and Mark, Michael admitted he still marvels at how he convinced his father to undertake such a venture.
“I told him that I wanted to go to Los Angeles, I knew I wanted to go to the United States, I knew I wanted to be an actor. My father, I know, thought I was a hippie. He looked me in the eyes and said, ‘If you want to be a lumberjack, you might as well go to the forest.’ So he got me in the car and drove me to California,” Michael J. Fox recalled.
However, making it big in Tinseltown was no easy feat. Michael faced significant hurdles; he hailed from a working-class family and lacked substantial wealth.
“I was living on the margins. I was 18 years old, with no money, no connections, literally dumpster diving for food,” he shared with Variety in 2023.
Despite these challenges, Fox persevered in pursuit of his acting dreams. Within a few years, he landed one of his most iconic roles. He was cast as Alex P. Keaton on the comedy series Family Ties, which swiftly became one of the most beloved comedy series on television.
Shortly after, he secured other roles, including his iconic portrayal of Marty McFly in Back to the Future.
In 2022, he disclosed that his mother was initially against him taking on the role in Back to the Future. It appears she had valid concerns.
At the time of landing the role, he was already juggling daytime filming for Family Ties. When he informed his mother about the opportunity, she cautioned him against it. Recalling their conversation, he said, “I was 23 years old, and I called her, she was in Canada, and I said, ‘They want me to do this Steven Spielberg movie, but I have to do it at night and I have to do Family Ties in the daytime.’ And she said, ‘You’ll be too tired.'”
Acknowledging his mother’s wisdom, he admitted, “I live for this kind of tired. It’ll be okay,” he reassured her. “To this day — well, till two weeks ago — my mother thought it was a really bad idea for me to do Back to the Future. She loved the movie, [but she was right], I got tired.”
During his time on the set of Family Ties, he crossed paths with Tracy Pollan. They portrayed each other’s love interests on the show. While their chemistry was evident on screen, it took a few years for their romance to blossom.
Interestingly, Michael J. Fox had harbored a crush on Tracy since their time on Family Ties.
“I developed a crush on her right away. When she left the show – the day she left the show, we were in the parking lot getting into our respective cars. She was getting into a rented Volkswagen, and I was getting into my Ferrari. And she called me over and said she wanted to play me a song.”
“She played me a James Taylor song called That’s Why I’m Here, which was ostensibly about John Belushi. And one of the lines was, ‘John’s gone, found dead, died high. He’s brown
In 2020, at the age of 60, Michael J. Fox bid farewell to his acting career. His final role was as Louis Canning in CBS’s legal drama “The Good Fight,” a spin-off of “The Good Wife,” where his character initially appeared. Explaining his decision to retire, Fox shared, “I reached the point where I couldn’t rely on my ability to speak on any given day, which meant I couldn’t act comfortably at all anymore. So, last year I gave it up,” as reported by Good Morning America.Following his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease, Fox struggled initially and turned to heavy drinking. Fortunately, he sought help and made the courageous decision to disclose his condition in 1998. Since then, he has been a beacon of strength and advocacy for those facing similar battles.Established in 2000, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has been instrumental in raising over $750 million to support Parkinson’s research, aiming to find a cure for the disease.
